Wife'nHubby. Thank you. We must have been posting at the same time. I wonder what I could use out of the forest and not have to do the wood split thing? Will sawdust work or is it too dense in pure form?
We seldom have a campfire because it chokes me up, depending on the kind of wood, but hubby could use these starters in the wood stove downstairs and, yes, I have to keep the door to the upstairs closed at least until the fire is almost coals or is really burning good. I'm not a person who normally has allergy problems.
Well... again we are mixing a 'campfire' fire versus a 'woodstove' fire... but the method I'll refer to works in both cases.
Fire smoke chokes me up also. "Top down" fires are less smokey, you don't have to continually add wood to the fire, you don't have to 'stir it up' to get it going, etc. Google the term "top down fire" and you will see lots of examples - they all refer to burning in a woodstove but the principle works for outdoor burning also.
Sawdust doesn't work - it's too dense. There is a company (Super Cedar) that uses cedar wood - possibly sawdust - but bigger pieces than you normal handyman sawdust.
I don't know what other natural product could replace the wood noodles that I use. Possibly wild, dried grass with the thick stalks - using the stalks more than the leaves of grass. If you are in the SE Wisconsin area I could share my 'stash' with you...... :)
