We bought a hang up shoe bag that hang on a closet door (several rows from top to bottom). We cut between the rows and then stapled them around the base of our bed. With the bed spread hanging down you can't even see them and keeps extra shoes out of the way and handy to reach.
I did the same thing, only instead of staples, I put grommets along the top of the sections, drilled holes through the bed's base, and used a screw with a washer and nut on the backside to hold it.
Also, I don't use it to store just shoes, I use it to store all kinds of small items, like underwear, socks, remote controls, phone chargers, etc. Anything small enough to fit.
