Hard to Pick a tire for TT

I have asked general questions before on tires. It is easy to confuse me with all of the symbols and codes...I currently have:

Radial ST 225/75 R15D (F-108)? They are 6 years old and we are headed out this spring on about a 3,000 mile camping trip over the rockies and to the Moab area...I have heard trailer tires need to be replaced every so many years, whetherthey look worn or not.

I am considering replacing them with LT tires.

My Trailer:
GVWR is 7900 lbs.
GAWR (each Axle) is 4,400 lbs.
Max Cargo is 1,460 lbs.

How do I choose the best match in a LT tire. I have tried looking at Tire Rack and michelin sites and it gets pretty confusing. Thanks for your help!
  • I'm having a heck of a time finding 14" Maxxis for my boat trailer. According to Maxxis, only Discount Tire handles Maxxis in AZ and there aren't any in stock of any size. What gives?

How do I know if my rims are compatible?

I understood that most spec's were stamped on the wheel (rim) somewhere. Mine were not, but the manufacture and model was. I looked that info up and found out what the spec's were.

You bring up a good point. I started looking for 16 inch 6 hole rims. Turns out I found some older rims I was going to buy used. I think GM but they wouldn't hold the weight, so only good for "P" rated tires IMO. Won't even get into "offset"

See gets into a whole new world. To me it was like buying my first computer years ago, a language all of their own.
  • Yep...
    and it gets pretty confusing

Here is bottom line IMO. 15 inch doesn't have the options of very many tires other than the ST type. So I priced out 16 inch rims and 16 inch LT tires. With 16 inch LT tires you can go faster if you want, more options and seem to last longer IMO. But it gets expensive.

  • X3 on the Maxxis ! This would be a good time to upgrade from your D rated tires to an E rated tire to increase your load capacity if your wheels will handle 80psi. I bought new Maxxis and upgraded and feel much more comfortable with a higher capacity tire for only a few dollars more.

More than likely your trailer will pull better with an upgrade, because the tires with 80 psi will not tend to sqirm as much, therefore less sway.

For 15" wheels get Maxxis 8008's. Do a search on here and you will get the idea.

I also recommend the Maxxis 8008. IMO it is the best ST tire available in a 15" size.

For your trailer weight, you may want to just consider a good ST, for your 15" wheels.

  • I don't think you will find much for light truck, in the 15" tires. You would have to go to 16" wheels.

For your trailer weight, you may want to just consider a good ST, for your 15" wheels.
