A few years ago we were at Yellowstone in the Hayden Valley, and were stopped on the road in the middle of a large bison herd. A medium sized bull was staring at us, and started coming towards us. He pawed the ground, stopped, stared, and them came forward again. He then rolled in the dirt, jumped up, and came forward again. He was about 25 feet from us now and on elevated ground. He pawed the ground and came forward again. The ranger drove his vehicle around us and got the cars in front of us to move so that we could also move away. The ranger's vehicle had speakers that bleated sounds that I assumed were from the biggest toughest bison in the herd. When the approaching male heard that he stopped, looked around, and quickly moved away. The ranger said that he probably saw his reflection in our large side windows, and that a TT had been charged and damaged earlier in the week.
It was a testosterone charged event with the males placing their noses in the urine streams of the females to see if they were ready. There was lots of pushing and shoving, and many dust clouds from the pawing and rolling in the dirt.
I'm glad that we don't need to do that. . . the dating scene would be so much different.
PS (Edit): We just got back from a month in Africa, with bull elephants charging our safari vehicle, hippos thrashing under our dugout canoes, and walking in the bush with lions, but it was the hyenas around the tent at night that got my attention.
