In 1975 we were tent camping at a provincial park in Canada. I was sitting at the picnic table eating oatmeal and donuts for breakfast. My husband was down the road a bit at the port-a-potty. I heard some rustling behind me, thinking he was returning to the campsite, and there was a black bear rapidly advancing. I leaped to the other side of the table (putting the table and the food between me and the bear). The bear climbed up on the table and thoroughly enjoyed MY breakfast. After I gathered my whits, I worked my way back to the car, dragged out the camera and started taking pictures. We're talking film and exposure meter era.
I waited in the car until I saw my husband walk back to the campsite, and called out to him the bear alert. He continued to approach, without the bear ever noticing. He slammed the trunk closed, and the the noise chased the bear off.The bear did, however, manage to grab our trash bag to take with him as he escaped into the woods. I am still busy taking pictures.
As we were leaving the campground, we decided to report the incident to the ranger station. We could not get into the ranger station because the bear was trash hounding the ranger's garbage right outside the office door.
It was quite and experience.
