Have you seen this new company

My brother listed his RV with this company to rent it out Outdoorsy.co They provided him with $1M insurance coverage for anytime it is rented through their system.

Anyone else listed theirs?
  • You know your rig is in trouble when it takes 4 guys to put out the awning...

From reading discussions here it is apparent that many RV owners here have little grasp of the intricacies of their RVs. I would never think of renting out my valuable and expensive possession to those with likely even less knowledge. Then again, I understand a few people even rent out their spouses . . . .

Well it is common practice with Motor Yachts and sailboats that often COST in excess of 1 million dollars.

This is a long standing practice that is well regulated and can allow someone to buy a much nicer rig than they might be able to afford otherwise.

This is not unusual and in reality the vast majority of renters take very good care of the boat/vehicle. Accidents are rare and insurance is usually more than what would ever be needed.

It may be common practice in the Yachting industry, but I bet there is a little bit of vetting the renter involved. Doubt that happens renting an RV. And you can happily go along with $1,000,000 of liability coverage, but that is peanuts compared to what you can easily be liable for should you have an accident involving serious injuries or fatalities. When you see all those settlements for three, four or five million dollars when a teen in paralyzed, where do you think that money comes from? And I bet your homeowner's umbrella will fight tooth and nail any claim for vehicle you rent out.
  • RVs are not made like yachts. If I lean on the wrong wall in some travel trailers, I have a good chance of damaging it. If I run the water heater empty, I now have to buy a new WH. If I run the fridge on an incline, that's a new fridge. If I leave a window open during a storm, that could render the rig to scrap with water damage.

Then, there are critters like bedbugs which people tend to bring with them.

Insurance? The problem may not be caught at once, but later on, and there would be 0% chance of a claim being paid. That 1 million dollar insurance policy is actually a tad puny. I can see some people hitching a 7500 pound dry weight trailer to their small SUV rated for 3500 pounds, using a one inch to two inch hitch receiver adapter so the class IV trailer hitch works on their class II receiver. Then, the renters get drunk, get in a wreck, hurt a number of people, and all of them sue the owner of the RV because it jack-knifed across the road and caused a chain collision.

Too many things can go wrong, and the cash coming in isn't enough to justify it. Especially with most RVs that are made as cheaply as they are. A boat is intended to last for decades. A newer travel trailer tends to convert itself into component pieces in less than 10 years.
  • The post wasn't about insurance as someone stated....it's about renting out your coach through a broker who happens to provide a million dollars in coverage.

I think very few rent out their RV's. It's one of those things where almost every time, the renter will be driving an RV for the first time. The chances of them backing into something or breaking something is extremely high. I think the only way that it's successfully done is buy a business that rents out what they own. They aren't personally involved in each coach as a typical RV owner would be. It's just business.

I would be a wreck from the minute my coach left until it returned and would probably want to kill the guy if he damaged it. I think most feel the same way and that's why there are few personal rentals. There's just too much that can go wrong with RV's. Heck, many have breakdowns and issues with their coaches when they use them for their own travel.
