Heading south from Canada

My wife and I are planning a long tour of the US and Canada, beginning in the North East, New Brunswick to be specific. We are thinking of leaving around Christmas or shortly after in the New Year. This will take place in a couple of years when I retire.
The first challenge would be to transport our 31 foot Rockwood TT from the heavy winter climes and icy roads to a more realistic climate like Virginia where we would de-winterize or summarise the rig.
Question #1 Do people pull their rigs in the snow? I can’t think of a more stressful trip. My idea was to do a summer trip south to the Virginia area during the summer and leave it at the end of the summer in storage for a later in the season pick up.
Question #2 Are there safe and reputable trailer storage places that this could provide a solution to my travel logistics?
Planning ahead and looking for advice, thanks in advance.

  • My suggestion would be to check
    Weatherbase
for several cities within each state along your projected route. Weatherbase shows stats collected for many years for average, highest and lowest temps, rain, snow, etc. by month. Most of the largest cities show the data over a 30 to 50 year time period. Not each year, but the average over that time period.
As an example, Albany, NY. doesn't look good for snow in Jan. or Feb. but better in March, but its marginally better than Syracuse.
  • If you do drive it in Winter you would need a guaranteed weather window long enough to get you well south. You don'tvwant to get caught in a wind blown snow storm.
  • Don't see any issue of driving it the winter time. It won't be like your are pressed for time or on a schedule and need to drive in a snow storm. If there is bad weather coming just park it and wait a day.
No difference driving on bare roads in summer or winter.

Now, if you can leave your trailer for a decent price you will save a bunch in fuel.
