Heat Pump

Are heat pumps worth the added cost and are they dependable plus which brand should I stay away from?

If you do true winter camping (below freezing) check the specs on your heat pump. Many will not provide heat at such low temperatures.

None of them work at that temperature. They were not designed for that temperature. They are for when it is only down to 38 or 40 degrees F outside. That is why your RV also has a furnace.

Our previous RV did not have a heat pump. Neither did our house. About 3 years after buying the RV, we moved and the new house had a heat pump. Now that we are downsizing our RV, we made sure we are getting a heat pump.
  • Heat pumps are OK when in moderate temps.
However they worthless/ineffective in true cold temps.
Efficiency is there real advantage vs. resistive heat. In a stick home efficiency means a reduced utility bill in an RV there is no real monetary saving provided by the heat pump.
I prefer a oil filled simple space heater. The space heater will work in moderate temps or when it is truly cold. The heat pump is only effective at moderate temps

X5 and they are 3-4 times more efficient than restive heat.
  • I too like using campground power instead of LP. Our 2004 Winnebago heat pump (basement air) still works fine... knock on wood.
  • x2 on wiltoad post. So much nicer, so much easier.

  • We use ours in the winter all the time and it does a good job for the times we need it. I'd rather use park power rather than propane. Below 40 it struggles and runs all the time until it auto switches to the furnace. As far as cooling it does a great job.

    I would buy it again.
