Power, no matter what form aint cheap. What these eco groups and the electric vehicle wannabees all fail to address is, where is all this electricity coming from? Thats right, its coming from coal, nuclear, and hydroelectric sources. All polluters in the eyes of the eco crowd. So, whats the long term solution? I have no clue, but electric vehicles is probably not it when you factor in disposal costs for all those batteries, not counting the energy costs to product them in the first place.
Some interesting info on the BC hydro website. If every car tomorrow morning in BC were to magically become electric the grid would see an increase draw of 19 percent. The over capacity of the grid is 30 percent. No power comes from coal in BC. Generalizing that power comes from coal just doesn't make sense. It depends where you are in the world. The average North American household that has an electric vehicle used the equivalent of what one electric water heater uses. The other end also gives some back. It takes about 6kw of power to make a gallon of gas. As the demand for gas goes down so does the strain on the grid from making it.
Re batteries. The vast majority of EV batteries are presently repurposed although eventually, just like lead acid batteries, they will be recycled...but they do last a lot longer. Most EVs are presently also being built with recyclying in mind at the end of their service life.
Curious though. What Eco groups...and what's an electric vehicle wannabe. I know a lot of folks who own electric vehicles and none of them belong to eco groups.
