height warning device

I would like to know if anyone has used a height warning device and are you satisfied with the device? I am thinking of maybe purchasing a Giraffe G4 unit after wracking our ac shroud with a low hanging branch.

  • Some time ago I made a simple metal "stick" that clamps in the window when closing the window. It pivots if it hits anything well before any of the high stuff on the roof is damaged. Easy to make and will alert you of such problems when installed and moving slowly. I only use it if the clearance is in doubt.
  • My opinion is if it can not fore see a low spot from some distance away then of what real good is it. You may be in a spot that you can not get out of easily.
  • I think the product has merit. The first time out in my MH I also hit a low hanging branch and destroyed my a/c shroud, BUT for the cost of the unit you could buy 6 a/c shrouds. You could damage other components on the roof besides an inexpensive shroud, but I am much more aware of my height today than in the past.

If it were an option of the MH mfg I would tend to jump on it.
  • What I take out of their web site is that you have to come to a stop in order for the unit to make the measurement. If that is the case chances are it wouldn't have helped you to miss the low branch unless you're going to stop and measure each time. Was the low branch in a campground?
