Upgrading to a fifth wheel is in my future, so from time to time I pick up on different tips mostly from the towing and the fifth wheel forums.
One interesting thing I found was the Andersen Ultimate Hitch It fits over a goosneck ball and actually puts the trailer 9 inches to the rear. Weighs 35 lbs. According to the video, it doesn't allow the trailer to bump you around. I have no experience towing a fifth wheel, so I don't know the validity of this point. Maybe someone will chime in. Check out the video as it should address your concern of having the trailer come crashing through the window.
Whatever one you choose, the rounded corners of newer fifth wheels help greatly.
One thing to think about is getting a bunkhouse if your kids are close to being out of the house.
I think you should go with the fiver.
