Help me understand California Turnouts - Updated

I've been in California the entire month of May and I'm not digging driving around here. I started from Las Vegas, NV to Anaheim, CA, then to Los Angeles, Monterey, San Francisco, Yosemite, Clear Lak...

I have def been in the pulling over every 5 miutes situation. You never get anywhere!

I try to find less crowded roads. If there's no one around, I can drive as slowly as I like.

When I do have people behind me, I put on my turn signal to show my intention to turn, while I look for a turnout. I don't want anyone getting impatient.

I don't know anything about California particularly. These are just my general practices.
