I don't tow, but with my 360 engine in the clipper, I rarely go over 55mph on mountain highways. I travel these roads in California all the time. My standard procedure:
1. Go the speed I can easily handle for the road conditions (that may be less than 55, rarely more);
2. If a passing lane comes up, move immediately into the right lane and stay there till the lanes merge (If someone comes up at the end, I'll adjust my speed down);
3. If on uphill/downhill stretches, I do not pull over (not worth the effort to start back up and not worth trying to brake to make the stop);
4. If on flat stretches, I will ride the shoulder if available to make room for passers and will pull over onto paved turnouts only (pulling onto a soft shoulder isn't going to happen).
I have never received the finger, been yelled at, been honked at, etc. I have very often received waves.
Yes, some people ride my rear and seem impatient, but I find that when they do pass me, they are the most likely to wave their thanks.
I think it may have to do with me not playing games with them - they seem to realize that I am not purposely being obtuse, but am trying to be safe AND considerate.
