Had this happen to me this past year. To get it to go down (if you can't force it down) you can pop the lower end out of where it's attached to the side wall of your bed frame. After playing with it for a bit I gave up and purchased two new gas struts, then installed them.
One thing I regret about the new struts is that you have to make sure they are the right size. The ones the dealer ordered for me were shorter than the ones I had. Thus, the bed doesn't open as far as it did. It's a bit of a problem, but I'm just dealing with it.
