I've learned to back in by myself. We pull up to the campsite, look at together to see where we want the FW to sit and then she goes off and walks the dogs. When she comes back Im backed in and already setting up.
God knows I love my wife but after nearly running her over when I couldn't see her it was time to learn to do it myself.
X2!
I look the site over konw what is at back on the sight, DW keeps the dogs and watches for crazy kids on bikes!
Her only spotting function is when there is a tree or brush right at back of the site. I have a great picture of a tree placed In the corner formed by the trailer and slide. - Had the same problem with my wife, kept standing on the wrong side of the trailer. So I position her on the other side of the trailer and she says she can't see the other side. Daughter did a lot better and then I got the Class A.
- ScottGNomadI tell my wife to watch me in my rear view mirrors when she's guiding me. If I cannot see her in them then the truck doesn't move. She realizes pretty quick that she needs to get back in view.
- Artum_SnowbirdExplorerMine knows she has to be seen, and she has to see the mirrors, but why she has to put her arm signals out of where I can see is beyond me. Giving up the fifth wheel was a good thing, now with a motorhome I can see the end of it on both sides so no issues anymore.
- Iraqvet05ExplorerI always tell my wife "if you can't see me in the mirror, I can't see you in the mirror".
Years of ground guiding heavy track vehicles in the military has taught me to stop when you cannot see your guide. I'd rather take it slow than pin someone under or between the vehicle or trailer. It's a learning curve backing in the TT but we both have been patient and gotten much better at it. I often over-correct and she often underestimates the correction needed. - HalmfamilyExplorerI've learned to back in by myself. - RoyFExplorerFor me, there is no substitute for getting out of the truck to actually look things over before backing. I may have to do that more than once to check for trees, picnic tables, etc.
My wife's signals are very useful on when to stop. I rely mostly on my own judgement for the steering, but I don't tell that to DW.
