Actually, you're right, my wife's car does have that. I've always thought of it as one of the idiot lights on the dash board and never gave acronyms a thought.
Many of us work in various areas, most with their own jargon, acronyms and initialisms. Even when common, not every acronym turns on a light bulb immediately. TPMS.... the only thing that came to mind was the "TPS Report" from the movie "Office Space".
In writing classes, I was taught that the first time you're going to use a short name, acronym, etc, you spell out the word/phrase followed by the short version in parentheses, then refer to the short version in the rest of the writing. It avoids confusion and communication is not very useful if it's not clear.
