Hershey, Pa show a good place to sell my RV?

It would be a drive for us but we have never been there and are willing to do it if it seems a reasonable opportunity to sell our RV,,as well as perhaps find our next RV:) for those of you who have been to the Hershey show do you think it is a reasonable idea or long shot? Do you have any specific suggestions as to how would be best to go about it? Are there particular campgrounds with high visibility or traffic for instance.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • So my dad did just this thing when he sold his class C about 10 years ago. Went to Hershey show early, parked it near the entrance with a For Sale sign and sold it that day.

Driving from TEXAS to Hershey sounds rather expensive to me. Looks like 1600 miles to Hershey from Victoria. At 12 mpg towing, that's 133 gallons of gas ONE WAY. Hoping to sell in one day, or else camping near one of the largest RV shows (lots of money to stay, hard to find a spot). Then you gotta drive back home, and what if it doesn't sell?

Sounds to me that it is WAY less risky to just trade it in or sell on Craigslist local. What camper do you have, what did they offer and what are you hoping to sell it for?

Unless the potential upside is several thousand dollars, I'm not sure it would be worth the risk...
  • We have friends and relatives who have made good deals at the Hershey show, trading in their current units on a new one. I don't know how Texas taxes work, but in many states when trading RVs, cars, or trucks you only pay sales taxes on the difference between trade value and selling price. In some cases that can be several thousand dollars.

Your in Texas why not consign it to PPL, might find your next RV there.
I did go sit down with PPL several months ago. As I recall the price they wanted me to agree to was quite low, lower than a typical trade-in price. I have also talked to Camping Worls about their consignments, better than PPL I think but with a little luck one might be ahead finding a private buyer.

Dealers ARE going to give you a bit lower offer but the advantage is you can get rid of it faster.

Private sale, well, you might squeak a couple dollars more out of it but you WILL be working the buyers pretty hard and it will take lots of time. You are going to have to deal with deadbeats, tire kickers and lots of no shows.

RVs are a depreciating asset, it loses "value" (money) every minute you own it, it never increases in value.

The thing you must realize is that it is used, it is not new and the value is often not as much as you may think.

It is only worth what a buyer is willing to give for it, price it accordingly..

I would not make a trip anywhere to try to scratch out a couple of dollars more out of it let alone as far as you are going.

Put it on Craigslist for a very small amount more than what PPL offered and I would bet the buyers will be offering the same price to buy as PPL..
  • private sale is best, take lot of pic,s put them on all the site,s you can think of and don,t over price it, most sellers make that mistake. and above all neat very clean, and ready to go. if its dirty people wonder about the rest of the rv.

  • Previous posters have good advice. If you are just wanting to sell it there are better ways. If you are wanting a new RV then I think your best bet is to trade it in on a new unit from the show. We traded ours in last year there and got a great deal.
  • I would not drive to Hershey in an attempt to sell your RV. I think everyone is there to see the new units and accessories available.

I live, about an hour away and would not try to sell my RV at the Hershey show.
If you decide to try it, I think your best bet is park it along one of the roads going into Hershey. That would give you the most exposure, more than in a parking lot.
I think it's a bad idea but, Good luck if you try.
  • Hershey is a very large show with an extremely large parking lot. There are some RV's in the parking lot with a for sale sign on them, but I don't know if they are welcome or if they have any success. You can overnight in the parking lot and have some exposure for selling.

The show itself is so large that you would want to narrow down the units that are of interest to you before going. Prices at the show may be higher or lower than available locally, so do your homework on that as well.
  • I would not drive it all the way from Texas to PA in hopes of selling it. If you do, while visiting the show drive right to the RV parking area at the Hershey Show and put a "For Sale" sign on it as I have seen others do every year. But I have no idea on how they make out.

Granted, there is a lot to see at the show, however it is a long way to come unless you have other places in mind to visit along the way.
