Hitch weight

I am looking at a 2008 Monaco coach with a listed hitch weight of 4000#. I have a jeep Cherokee 4x4 which I want to tow behind . it has a weight of just under 4000#. Will this work or do I need a heavier rated hitch?

  • That is essentially the exact same mh as my Safari Simba except I had the 330 CAT engine and a couple more hundred torque. Still, I would bet that you have a 10,000 tow limit (towing capacity). I would also venture to guess that the 4000 lbs you speak of is the CCC (cargo carrying capacity) which is the difference between the GVWR and the curb weight).

You are good to go with your 5000 lb jeep.

PS... noticed I said 5000 lb jeep...meant 4000 lb. Also, even if your coach is NOT rated for 10,000 tow, it surely is rated for 5000 lbs.
  • The motorhome is a 2008 Monaco LaPalma XL34 SBD which is 36' long and has a Cummins ISB 325 engine. I had my Jeep weighed with full fluids but no passengers and it was just under 4000#.
  • What 2008 Monaco coach do you have? DP...Gasser? Length? And how do you know your jeep weighs 3987 lbs? Did you weigh it or is this also from a brochure?

When you refer to "hitch weight", you are actually referring to the amount of weight that can be put "on" the hitch....not what can be towed which would be called "towing capacity". Typically, the towing capacity is the difference between the coach's GVWR and its GCVWR.

I had a 2008 35' Safari Simba DP (which is actually a Monaco) and it had a towing capacity of 10,000 lbs. Most all Gassers today have a 5000 lb towing capacity.

So, please do give us more specific info on your coach.

  • When you're pulling a toad you really DON'T have to worry about hitch weight. You should be more interested in the rated towing capacity. My small gasser is rated at 5K pounds and a Monaco DP will probably be rated at 10K pounds.
  • My jeep weighs 3987# and the hitch weight is what is quoted in Monaco's 2008 brochure.
  • Are you sure it's not a 5000 lb rated hitch. Haven't heard of a 4000 lb one. In any case, have you actually weighed your Jeep? Might be heavier than you think.
