Hole in door

I hit my tailgate into the baggage department door of my fifth wheel and put a approximate 8 inch hole in it . The fifth wheel is a gel coat fiberglass I don't know if that is the same material for the door. My question is how can I fix it or am I better buying a new door thanks

  • I had a friend who had a slide in camper. Every time he damaged it, he just screwed a vent over it.

This may sound cheesy, but if it's the door under the overhang, a vent cover wouldn't look that unusual, since some contain generators.

A redneck fix would be to seal the hole with metallic tape, spray paint the tape dark and then screw a vent plate to the door to cover the tape and hole. Will look like a vented storage compartment.

or use 1/2 steel plate. It will stand up better when you back into it next time.:B
  • If you are reluctant to repair it on your own, go fine a boat repair place.

There are lots of ways to repair the door which have been posted already. Another option is to fill in the hole with Bondo and chopped glass to a 60-40 percent glass to resin ratio and then bond a .020 sheet of FG or .020 AL sheet that would cover the entire door. I am assuming the door is flat with Al surrounds. If the door is flush and is wrapped on the bottom the .020 material is thin enough to form to a wrapped surface. Good Luck on your repair.
  • I shop for all sort of aluminum panels and sheet goods here:Discount Steel They will cut and ship. They have yards in Mpls, MN and Fort Worth, TX.

Otherwise, I do have some white vinyl clad aluminum sheet and plenty of small aluminum plate. If you don't have a large hole to cover, send me a PM with the dimensions and we can probably work something out.

  • My brother did the same thing but, not as big of a hole. We just glued it back together.

Do you have a local friendly auto body shop you could ask this question of ? Most cars these days are made of some sort of plastic/fiber glass/cheap stuff. The body shop people may be able to point you in the right direction.
  • It is possible to buy a new door, but they are hard to size...I assume you have radius corners on your door. Most doors do not have a gel coat exterior. Contact some RV surplus suppliers. It's much easier to go to a supplier, but that might not be convenient.
  • Patch the hole and repaint or you could get a piece of checker plate and cover the whole door.
