Honda CR-V AWD vs 4WD

Having our 2010 4wd serviced as I write this. The service writer referred to it as AWD. I told him about this forum. Got a chuckle. Bottom line is that whatever Honda chooses to call it from year to year, it is a superior toad. It, like my wife's 2001 Volvo AWD Cross Country wagon, is a great soft road vehicle. My 2002 FT4WD Grand Cherokee Overland, which could be manually shifted to low 4WD, was the off road vehicle of the year I bought it. Heavy to tow for a gas coach & not up to my required level of dependability. At 67k miles, our CR-V is about a1/3 through it's anticipated life. I just hope when the time comes, Honda is back in the dinghy market. Won't get jeeped again!

Tranny different on the 2015. Cannot be towed 4 down.

Sorry about this but, we're not living across the street from the Honda tech anymore. We've moved from So Cal to Lake Havasu City AZ now. So, at present, I cannot talk with him on this subject. About the only thing I can suggest is to go directly to a Honda dealer, DO NOT TALK WITH A SALES REP unless you can't get passed them and, go dig out an owners manual for a '15 CRV and see what it says for flat towing. That's the WRITTEN word from HONDA and, if they say it can or, cannot be towed, that's who I would believe.

There is a difference. Per CA Traveler above..... It's not recommended to utilize 4WD on dry pavement.

Our Envoy has tranny options: 2HI A4WD 4HI 4LO

For the 4HI 4LO options all 4 wheels are locked together which results in a lot of tire scraping and a lot of drive train stress on dry pavement.

New Car, New Year, Congrats and Be Happy.

CR-V is great, no matter what we call the drive. Just for me, it's AWD if it's always engaged, or ready to engage automatically, and meant to be driven that way all the time. 4WD? Driver Selectable, usually with Low/High, meant to be engaged when needed.

My daughters have had five Subaru's. Four are the AWD we're familiar with (towable only in the Manual Transmission versions). The fifth was an old small model, "Loyale" maybe. It was FWD unless the driver flipped a switch to power the rear wheels as well. It was badged.... "4WD"

UPDATE: The previous posts were made a few months ago. We made the purchase today and bought the 2013 CR-V-EX-L AWD. Next step get familiar with the car and then have it set up for towing in the Spring.
Thanks to all who offered the advice in the past posts. It helped us make the decision.

we have a 2013 AWD and it tows great. CR-V's now only offer 2WD or AWD. Dick

Within the knowledgeable, experienced "community" 4WD is recognized as being strictly a "part-time" system that must be activated via driver action with cautions as to when, or not, it is appropriate to do so.

There are literally a myriad of AWD systems in the market today, more properly called "automatic" AWD, wherein the extra drive wheels are only coupled into the engine at specific times and/or conditions.

The most desirable by a wide margin, most "safe", would be the R/AWD systems.

At the top of the F/AWD "heap" by a wide margin would be the Honda/Acura SH-AWD system. Middle ground will be the system using the above described pre-emptive systems using an electromagnetic clutch to vary the torque coupling to the rear. At the bottom will be the VC systems which will have no time to "stiffen" before TC activates.
