Like everyplace, California has it's pluses and minuses. It has some beautiful natural features. The Pacific coast, the Redwoods, Yosemite etc. etc. It also has that dying sinkhole known as the Salton Sea. It has Beverly Hills and Malibu. It also has Watts. It has the high tech wealth of Silicon Valley and the Poverty of Migrant worker communities. LA and San Fransico are fantastic in many ways, yet traffic, high prices, and congestion beyond belief surely sours others.
California also has it's political and regulatory issues. It sure works for some, it sure rubs others raw. Many businesses thrive in California, and other business people would rather walk thru the lion's cage wearing pork chop panties than try and start and run a business under California's watchful eye.
Of course California is more controversial than Kansas or Iowa. California has a lot of everything, Kansas has wheat and Iowa corn (no offense to either, I know that actually isn't true, but we are dealing with stereotypes, not actual facts when talking about liking or hating a state).
