New Jersey to California

Stay a night or two at Hearst San Simeon SP near Cambria. Dump, water, cell and internet available. And a night or two at Plaskett Creek USFS campground 40 miles north of Hearst. Both are on CA1, the Pacific Coast Highway. Water available but no electricity, dump, cell or internet at Plaskett. It’s a doable drive if you pay attention from Morro Bay to Monterey. If the Castle is open, see what Hearst built and gave to California.

Try not to take the 8, down by Yuma AZ. Instead, use the 40, going through Kingman AZ. Stop to see the Hoover dam. Head over to a casino in Bullhead City. When it comes to the PCH, there is just too much to list..... Do you have Carlsberg Caverns on your list of stops? Right now is the time to leave. It still hasn't hit the 100's in AZ or Texas....

There's a lot of country to be seen between NJ and CA. You could take 6 days to make the trip or you could take a lifetime and not see everything that is interesting.

Good idea is to stay in Williams Az and use the railroad to the canyon, great campground by the train.

Tusayan has lots of National Forest disbursed camping and is ten minutes from the Grand Canyon park entrance. GCNP also has a no cost dump and water site available to all.

Lots of disbursed camping south of Williams too.

By going that route,you will be going on the Pa and Missouri Turnpike. We did that in the past,then we started taking I-81 to I-40. No tolls and in my opinion better roads.

Personally l avoid any where from San Diego to Los Angles!! Congested traffic and crazy drivers, especially with an RV!! From Ariz. start your Pacific coast adventure from Santa Barbara north. By pass San Francisco unless you park your RV in an RV Park
for a couple of days. The pacific coast north to the Oregon border is great. Instead of San Diego and L.A. I would do the whole Oregon coast!!

Carlsbad Caverns would be quite a long detour off your I-40 route.

I prefer staying inside GCNP because sunrise and sunset times are beautiful on the canyon walls. Plus I'm on my own schedule. Must get campsite reservations.

I agree, you won't enjoy driving RV in southern CA.

We found the Oklahoma City Memorial to be hauntingly beautiful (we only visited outside portion). Stop at Tucumcari, NM for some Route 66 kitsch.

highly recommend reservation near the grand canyon and also anywhere on the pch.
be sure your a/c is working because you will need it.
