I was stationed in Northern California for four years. I enjoyed the scenery etc, but hated the politics and taxes. I was told from reliable sources that they were going to tax my military retirement income proportional to the time spent in California. I refused to file California state income tax (wife worked in California) because I was concerned they would have my info and tax accordingly. Every year, they owed me a refund but I never filed. I don't know if it was true, but I wasn't taking any chances.
I really enjoyed the scenery... Yosemite, PCH and I would visit again, but will never live there.
I do believe there are actually two California's.. North and South. Almost like two different worlds.
