When I was kid, I was in Boy Scouts. We had an annual winter campout in a big old army tent with no floor. We scraped as much of the snow off as possible, laid down a big piece of heavy plastic and set up the tent. Then we took a couple of bails of hay and spread them around. We had a great time sledding all day, so we were all ready for bed by about 8PM.
The park ranger (who lived just down the road) came out about midnight and put his spotlight on the tent. "Everybody okay in there ?" "Yeah we are trying to sleep !" "The 11PM news said the temp was going to get down to -20 !" "Go away !"
Now I don't know if that was actual -20 or -20 windchill, but it was darn cold. The big discussion was do you sleep in your long johns which were still full of sweat or take them off so they can hope dry a bit before you got in you sleeping bag !
Good times !
