as a mom of a 2 yr old & 6 yr old...the way our set-up is we were able to put a pressure gate a couple feet before the door last season. fortunately this season she knows to not open the door and wait for someone to open it and help her down the steps. Friend's of our's put a hook-and-eye latch on their door.
