We did the hook eye latch, placed it on the inside, at a height that we can reach through the slide cover, yet high enough so my kids can't reach. Works great.. only issue now is I need to put plexiglass on the lower part of the door, as the youngest starts pushing on it. While the handle/rail idea seems like a good idea, they can still open the door far enough to get arms/legs caught.
