Tensions do seem to be running higher on the expressways in the Chicago area, most likely due to the ongoing construction and constant heavy traffic. My best advice would be to get behind a semi in the center lane and stay there (obviously not too close). Most truckers are excellent drivers and maintain a constant speed. Since most people don't like to drive behind them they will avoid you as well. I can't imagine someone cutting you off to get behind a semi. By staying in the center lane you won't have to worry about merging traffic.
I assume it's the same everywhere, but it always amazes me how many people I see texting while driving around here. Scary.
