Depending on who's statistics you look at, somewhere between 70%-80% of all accidents involving tractor-trailers and passenger vehicles, are the fault of the passenger vehicle. The majority of accidents that the semi is "at Fault", are backing accidents.
Lets just say 75%....
How many of them are rear-end accidents where the car driver claimed to be just minding their own business, when that big semi plowed them over? Of course, failing to mention that they cut in front of the truck, taking away the proper safe distance needed for stopping (which is why more and more dash board cameras are being used).
How many side-swips occured because the tiny car was hanging out in the NO-ZONE (blind spot)? Sure, the semi is at fault---but it could have been avoided if the car driver used some sound judgment.
How many trucks tried to avoid one car, only to hit another...do you think car number one pulled over and said: "Wait, that accident was caused by me".
What does this have to do with RVing????
Most drivers do not respect a 80,000lb truck, do you think they are going to respect what it takes to drive a RV????
They think you left that big gap in front of you, so that they have a place to dart in to.
That wall in a construction zone scares them, so they will hug the center line, with no thought that your combination vehicle rocks/rolls and needs all the wiggle-room it can get.
They can not see around you, so they will try to pass, without "speeding", which means they sit beside you for miles, and miles, and miles. When they finally get around you, zoom they go, back into the lane in front of you. Of course, they will also slow down, leaving you to wander why they passed if they are going to go slower then you are travelling.
Larger vehicles appear to be going slower. Many people think they can beat a train, and the same is true with tractor-trailers and RVs. You of course see them coming, get hard on the brakes, they go happily on their way, none the wiser that they just cut you off.
UNLESS of course you hit them... my personal favorite..
8 1/2 feet wide, 13 1/2 feet tall, over 70' long....they will say they did NOT see the truck :):S
Doesn't matter if you are on a motorcycle, driving a car, pulling a RV, or driving a semi. Some people have little respect for the space others need to safely operate their vehicle.
Awareness is the KEY. YOU have to know what is going on around you, do not rely on others watching out for you. Always leave an OUT, so when that idiot does something, you can react. Oh, and slow down; give yourself time to react.
Then smile :B you have the RV, you will be relaxing soon. That idiot is probably late for work.
