How do you long termers handle grey & black water?

I'll be leaving in a week for a long term CG hosting spot and, new to me, will be having a sewer connection.

For those of you that have similar setups, how do you handle your grey water tank? Do you leave the valve open permanently and dump black as needed? Do you close the grey a day or two before you feel you need to dump your black or do you follow some other procedure?

I do have a SanTFlush.

Thanks in advance.

Some leave the gray open, Some both.. Not recommended.

now. if you choose to leave the valves (either one) open make sure there is a "Dip" in the hose so that it forms a water trap, also make sure it is legal to do that (I know of one county where it is NOT legal, the law says a smooth slope to the hole in the ground.... I will not comment on my opinion of that law).

I close both valves then when I feel the time has come (Living along that is once a week, with a wife it was 2x a week) I dump black, close, and then gray, and close.

One time I forgot to close..... If you check out any RV mags there will be a company offering to help you pour your hard earned cash down the toilet.. Er. Selling "Black tank odor Treatments"... Well,, it was the gray I left open.

In the ad they show a very stinky RV.. Sure enough I had that very stinky RV, Even outside it stank.. I closed the valve and within 30 minutes the stink was gone.. Like magic.

Oh, if you'd like my advice on tank additives... I think I just gave it (Money down the toilet.. LITERALLY) Just toss in the odd dollar, every bit as effective (or not effective) as the chemicals and much easier on the sewer system.
  • Looks like 4-2, 4 for leaving both closed... 2 for leaving gray open.

Whenever I camp, even for a few days to a week, I leave both closed. When I dump the black, after about 5-6 days, I will also dump the gray.

  • We dump gray 3-4 times more often than black. The main thing is to not leave open for extended periods.
  • Never leave the black open.

You can leave the gray open but I advise against it. The trickle of water can leave solids and you are open to the sewer which can mean flies and odors.

Prefer to keep both closed. When the black needs to be dumped do so, then empty whatever is in the gray tank behind it. Leaving the gray open will encourage food debris and grease buildup just like leaving the black open encourages poop buildup.

This is the way we do it. I prefer the flush versus the trickle. And don't need to encourage the drain/sewer flies to visit our rig.
  • I would leave both closed and then dump both when the first one fills. Like tonymull says, if you leave the grey tank open there isn't enough water going through all the time to flush things out and down your sewer hose well
  • Prefer to keep both closed. When the black needs to be dumped do so, then empty whatever is in the gray tank behind it. Leaving the gray open will encourage food debris and grease buildup just like leaving the black open encourages poop buildup.
  • X2. Gray open. Close a day before tou wantnto dump black. DW and I and when were hosting, I got in the habit to dump once week, and flush really well.
