How do you pay your bills while on the road for an extended trip of a month or longer? We pay our bills online from home but are leery of say logging in at a Starbucks on the road to pay bills. What's a secure way to do it?
Use the secure hotspot on my phone. You don't need a separate hotspot device if your phone can produce one (at least for Verizon.) - LtripExplorerVirtually all my bills are in some way automatically paid. Some debit from the checking account, some charged to a credit card. The only bill that is not on automatic are the infrequent ones, like a doctor bill that comes in the mail. And I use my cell phone as a hotspot to use the internet securely.
Cheers! - Chum_leeExplorer

Only use secure connections for banking. If you feel better about it, use a national bank (like Wells Fargo, B of A, etc.) and go to a local branch to conduct business. DO NOT stay online at a Starbucks, Micky D's or any other public WiFi's for any length of time. If you have no other way, conduct your business, then log off immediately, when you are done. Use current software and keep your security updates current. Do not store account numbers, passwords, or user ID's on your phone/computer.

Fortunately my new 2019 truck has its own secure wifi hot spot. The only problem is the truck has to be running to use it....
What have you got? My 2016 Silverado does not require the engine to be running. I just turn the key one click to the accessory position. - JKJavelinExplorer IIII use the Winegard Connect2 with 4G in our 5th wheel. It is also secure using it with an rv park's free wifi.
JK - rk911Explorer95% of our revurring bills are auto debited from our bank account. we send a check or initiate an online payment for the remaining 5% after receiving an e-mail bill. been doin this for several decades with no problems.
- BobboExplorer IIIThe vast majority of my bills are set up with automatic payments through the billing company. The ones that aren't, I use either my phone as a hotspot so I am still using MY ISP, or, if I don't have service, I use McDonalds/Starbucks/etc. Any of the large chains.
- pianotunaNomad IIIHi,
I log on using my cell phone's hot spot. - DrewEExplorer IIWhen I went on my RV trip to Alaska, I set up most of my bills to be paid via automatic transfers from my account and paid my mortgage in advance for the months I was gone.
Logging in to your bank, etc. from your computer at, say, a Starbucks is not unsafe provided you don't accept any new trusted certificates from the access point (which reputable places will not even request). The connection to the bank is encrypted on your computer and decrypted at the bank; no one in between can snoop on the contents of the data. (You'll see the little padlock icon in the web browser, and the URL will start with https rather than http.) You should, of course, take care to avoid more basic things like someone standing behind you and watching your keyboard and screen over your shoulder.
You could also log in via a phone using a cellular data connection rather than relying on some Wi-fi access point, if it makes you feel more secure trusting the phone company's connection rather than the coffee purveyor's or campground owner's connection. - Grit_dogNavigator IIGet a hotspot on your phone or tablet /computer or a mifi if you’re worried about it.
