If someone invited me to go camping, I would never expect them to foot the bill. If we ask someone to meet us for dinner, it's all separate. Why is asking someone to do something with you mean they pay nothing? Not being made of money means that everyone helps carry the load. I don't consider it crass, or cheap. If they invite us, we pay our way, no one would expect anything different.
OTOH the OP set up the conditions before they left, so that's a bit of a different story.
