- Bill___KateExplorerWe save our dryer lint. Stuff it into an empty dog food can - any can will work, but we have mostly dog food cans LOL. Then when we cook bacon, I pour the excess grease into the can on top of the lint. I am sure used cooking oil would work too. It is amazing how much grease a can packed full of link will soak up. When you are ready to start your fire, dump the lump of lint/bacon grease out into the fire pit, place some kindling wood around it, and light it off. The lint acts like a wick for the grease, and it burns hot for a remarkably long time, and things started off nicely.

I pick up tiny shavings from the campfire area, light them, add bits of cut shavings and small kindling, then a bit larger and put a bigger piece on each side. By now, it's a nice kindling fire, and a few bigger pieces go in next.
If I can find a piece of pitch off a tree, that is fair too.
Like others that use fire starters.. for me, it's part of the ritual of camping. Also, it's a great skill to teach your little ones.
X2. This is the fun way to do it and as stated a great trait to teach your kids. - free_radicalExplorer
