- lj2654ExplorerI like to drive 3 hours max in a day. Stop by three or 4 pm so I can get settled slowly before dinner hour. But I am never in a hurry to get anywhere. I enjoy the trip as much as the destinations.
- LwiddisExplorer III believe that plan for 550 miles starts out your trip in a lousy way...tired and grumpy. Join our club...drive 230 miles and stop, or stop at 2:30 p.m.

We are planning a trip to Yellowstone next August. I want to go about 550 miles the first day. My wife says thats too far. What do others think?
550 in one day, we've done that but it wasn't real enjoyable, but doable. do it several days in a row? nope.
BTW I've more than occasionally driven 775 miles non towing in a day by myself and very often with DW sharing driving. Doing that run solo is less tiring than 500 miles towing.
We generally try a day that is 350 or less, maybe 400 miles or less unless we are planning on short day afterwards, or a day stopped.
When towing our goal is getting up and having a nice breakfast, start the road trip and be in the camping spot by 3pm, ready for a relaxing afternoon and evening.
Don't like rushing breakfast and don't like arriving such that as soon as we are pulled in it's time to start dinner prep.
That pretty much sets the 350ish miles/day. And that gives us time to do some siteseeing stops etc. if we want. - wowens79Explorer IIIWe did 800 in a day coming home from the Keys to Atlanta. We left Marathon at 8 am, and got home at 2am. We stopped a couple of times to walk around for a bit, and then we were stuck in Macon GA for about 2 hours due to a wreck.
Like someone else mentioned, it depends on where you are in life. When you work and have kids in school, we like to push to the destination. I'd rather spend a day in the keys, or at home than at an overnight stop in south Georgia.
We really want to take a trip to Yellowstone also, but from Atlanta it's about 2100 miles. That would be 4 500+ mile days each way, and we just can't justify 8 days of driving for 6 days in the park. - OldSmokeyExplorer10 to 12 hours at 65-70mph
about 600 miles a day with breaks, we both drive and switch every 2 1/2 to 3 hrs - allen8106Explorer1000 miles in 18 hours, stopping only for fuel and food.
- Chuck_thehammerExplorerI am over 65. wife also.
I do 1,800 miles over 4 days... twice a year.
and we use the trailer each night... Dry camp..
I try to average 450 per day... over 4 days...
done this several times... and plan to continue.
.....added....... my wife will not drive a truck.. or pull a trailer. - ScottGNomadI did a 14 hour day one time and went about 1K miles. It was brutal and I was totally exhausted. That was many years ago and I would never do it again - there's just no fun in it.
I am most comfortable with something well under 300 miles and preferably closer to 200. - troubledwatersExplorer IIILongest "trip" ever, 698.7 miles in 13 hours, 1 stop for gas. Left at 3:00 a.m. arrived at 4:00 p.m. In bed by 8:00 p.m. left next morning at 3:00 a.m. for another 569.2 miles to my destination. Two weeks later I did the return trip 3 days for 12 hours each. Same scenario, leave at 3:00 a.m., stop at 3:00 p.m., in bed by 8:00 p.m.
- chris3403ExplorerWife and I are both 69. I pulled the 5th wheel 484 miles in one day back 5 years ago. Last month I did 2 days; 422 the first and 418 the 2nd day but I really don't like doing over 300 miles anymore. 300 miles is about a 7 hour day for us. Wife doesn't like to leave before 11 or 12 so that makes it rough on us to get somewhere in a decent hour.
