Lets put this aside right away. You're not going to "mess your truck up" if you don't use the TH with the size trailer you have.
To answer your question: The factory recommendations I have seen are; anything over about have the truck gross towing weight they "recommend" the TH be on. Please note that this is a recommendation not a warning.
I tow a 7K TT with a 2500 diesel and I don't use TH most of the time. For the weight I'm towing it just doesn't work too well. It's too aggressive for me. In steep mountains it works ok and I turn it on. When I'm towing flat for miles at a time I turn it off and enjoy the mileage gain.
In short, it's your truck. If you drive with it on and you like it, keep it on. If you drive with if off and it works out better, keep it off. In other words, see what works out best for "you."
