How much is to much for no tow/haul mode?

Diesels don't like to be lugged. I don't think you will notice a mileage gain not using T/H, but you can certainly experiment.
I use T/H to get rolling while towing, and turn it on and off depending on road condition.
On long open downhills, I turn it off because I don't want or need the downshifting.
