So how, exactly, do you control torque converter lockup without using T/H mode?
A lot of T/H mode is torque converter lockup, especially in lower gears where it's not normally used. Torque converter lockup helps keep transmission temps down.
It's something I learned after my first "heavy" haul with my old 2003 Chevy 1500. On the interstate pulling about 5500lbs, I found that I could hold OD with the torque converter unlocked with T/H deactivated, but the truck would downshift to 3rd and run 2800RPMs with T/H engaged.
Unbeknownst to me I was cooking my transmission fluid. It was a one-time thing so no harm no foul, but repeatedly abuse like that surely would've cost me a transmission sooner rather than later.
If you do a lot of heavy hauling, T/H is a good thing if only for that aspect.
