Check Reserve America for an opening in South Florida and you'll find its around April before openings start up.
Its really pretty depressing, I imagine especially for folks who get a few days off with good weather and can't get into a site.
Whats frustrating though is the number of sites that are vacant even though the website shows it completely booked. I asked about the vacant sites when we were at Sebastian Inlet and Anastasia recently and was told many folks never show up or cancel. Then I looked at whats involved in cancelling a reservation and there is a fee of over $17 just to cancel - no matter how far in advance. Just seems like there has to be a more camper-friendly way to ensure they don't lose money yet be reasonably flexible.

That is common in Texas, come busy weekends. People will make up fake names and use disposable credit cards to reserve spots at more popular campgrounds, then put them up on eBay. So, on a crowded weekend, there might be spots free due to this.
