I retired at 44 after 26 years making great money in a steel mill. My parents instilled in me to save every little bit I could and that was the best advise I could have ever received. After my retirement I moved to FL and took a year to do absolutely whatever I wanted, which was not too much.
After a year I wanted a job that I could work the hours I wanted and didn't have to take any crap. I found my niche' in a hardware store. I LOVED IT. I could work a month and then take off then go in again for a bit. Sure it didn't pay a lot but I didn't do it for the money.
As luck or lack of it would have it, I became disabled due to a work related injury at 54 so my SS disability and Medicare now pays a lot more than I was making at the hardware.
In short, I advise doing whatever you can to retire as soon as you can. My parents both worked almost till the end. Yes, they were loaded but you can see where that got them.
