I retired at 62 by choice, rather than burn out in a high stress 24/7 job. I used Cobra coverage for a couple of months, but NY State at that time offered a very affordable insurance plan for small and sole proprietor business folks, that I qualified for by virtue of maintaining a small online business. That plan easily carried my wife and I until Medicare kicked in at 65. I don't know if other states have similar subsidized plans for small businesses, but sometimes business associations have some sort of group plan available at a reasonable cost.
