It seems to me that the OP is merely asking at what age people retired and what they do about medical insurance, and not looking for advice on when he should retire.
Kinda what I thought also.
For the OP's insurance - he needs to see what ACA will do for him..:@
Sure benefited a couple of folks I know who were paying mega-bucks for insurance due to pre-existing conditions.
Coverage increased & cost went down.....dramatically..:C
When to retire - depends on your employer/employment, what benefits you will continue to have (if you stay on the job) -vs- the same if you retire.
Do you have a viable skill you can dabble in after retirement (if you want to) at the same rate of pay (or close) - even if it's part-time?
Ex: An accountant can still do taxes once a year, etc.
Others may *not* have that option.
Will there be some kind of serious increase in pay or benefits if you wait?
Simply stated - everyone's situation/s is/are different -and-
ya gotta (try to) know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em..;)
Me = retired at 55 (in 1998) - and "ends (still) meet" just fine.
(was able to stay on employer's medical until eligible for Medicare -
but there *were* out-of-pocket expenses for same).
Advice - say "Adios!" ASAP.
You only go around once.
