How useful is a washer/dryer

We're shopping for a motor home, and evaluating the utility of various features. If you have a washer, do you use it often, or do you end up at the laundromat anyway? Has anyone replaced a motor home that had a washer with one that didn't? Did you miss it terribly? Apologies if this has been addressed; I searched the forums and didn't find this topic.

  • Wow, so many rapid great responses. We've definitely come to the right place!

One of the units we like is a 2006 Georgie Boy, which doesn't have W/D prep. Another one in our sights has a W/D (or at least prep) and an extra half bath. It's also $10K more. Perhaps there's a third possibility, one that does have W/D and fits our budget. Thanks for all of your replies.

  • Our previous coach had a combo W/D and we found it not to our liking. We had to run a load every night and typically, the dryer could only handle 1/2 of that load so had to run it twice. The unit may have been a little out of balance somehow as it really vibrated the motor home. We eventually gave up and used it as a dirty clothes hamper and used the park's facilities for our washing/drying. This was also really not very desirable...inconvenient to say the least.

However, our new motor home has a stacked W/D and while it is quite as big as our units at home, they will handle quite a bit of clothes at one time and you can run the dryer separately from the washer...big plus! We now wash once a week and works out very well.

Highly recommend the stacked unit.....combo not so much.

We put a combo unit in two years ago and my DW absolutely considers it essential. The combo unit takes some getting used to. It is small and slow so it is most effective doing frequent loads rather than waiting for "wash day." She loves being able to do a load of wash over coffee and breakfast and in her pajamas if she wishes. She doesn't have to wait for a dryer and she isn't worried about questionable clientele, except me of course. We don't have to carry two huge bags of clothes, detergent, dryer sheets etc. back and forth, and maybe most importantly, we don't have to arrange for $20.00 worth of quarters. Cost effective? I don't know and I don't care. DW is happy and that makes me happy.

    X2: DW loves it.
We were not aware that it was not as useful when boondocking. :E
It washes clothes just as well, never had a problem.
  • Love it means I pack less stuff just do a load every few days. Works well.
  • We happened to buy a mh with a combo unit. I didn't think I'd use it much, but ended up using it a lot. We snowbird for about 4 months. I do about 5 loads a week, as it holds about 1/3 of what my washer holds at home.
We always stay in parks with full hook- ups.

  • Hi,

They are useful when there is a water and sewer hook up. If you intend to boondock a lot--not so useful then.
