How/What to clean Aluminum exteriors with

I am dead set on making sure I take great care of my RV, so here is my next question, which BTW my first post was great with all the feed back.

My Wilderness RV has what I think is an aluminum exterior, what a recommended cleaner. I am being told never to use dish washing liquid or any harsh cleaners. It is not heavily soiled but has not been cleaned "exterior" in 2 years.

  • In between the semi annual black streak removal we use a Turtle Wax wash & wax product that has carbona wax. Twice a year we wash and remove streaks with black streak remover , wash again and then apply liquid wax.

Not to steal a thread, but it is related....How do you get the black mold looking spots off the soft rubber / vinyl trim that is around doors etc.? May not be mold but it looks it, black spots. Tried a cleaner with a little chlorine in it but was afraid to leave it on very long.

Sodium hydroxide, or lye but don't get it on metal and some paints.
  • If it is painted aluminum a good quality car wash is all you need. I use ones with wax mixed in. After waxing that behemoth one time you will understand the wisdom of this. A little bleach in the water will help with any mildew that gets on it if you live in a humid climate as I do. Mine still looks nice after 8+ years and it sits outside exposed to the elements all the time.

  • Zip Wax on a soft brush, and Reliable RV cleaner for the black streaks. If you haven't touched the trailer's exterior in two years, you either have black streaks or it's stored inside and you don't use it.

This is the first time in six years that I feel like I need a genuine, hand-applied, wax job. Prolly gonna have to bite the bullet and do it this year. Zip Wax will take most of the easy stuff off and leave a decent shine if you use it three or four times a year. I wash the roof twice a season with Spic-N-Span. Every Year gets a little harder to maintain that new look.
  • I will go against what most will say, I have used dish washing soap on all my RVs, P/Ups, MC, you name it for 60 years give or take. I always get high book or above on ever thing that I sale as they look nearly new 10 years later. I do keep ever thing waxed. The 40 ft DP was a job to wash tho. the 14 ft Terry TT not so much. I have had many more than the average person when it comes to RVs
as one weekend I bought 6 RVs. I use to buy low and sell high but I always used dish washing soap to clean the outside
  • The Folks where we store ours use vinegar to clean Airstreams. Wipe it down and flush it off in little sections, I guess. Then the buff it.
I've not watched them do nor asked specifics. I know they make one shine like a mirror.
