I had a similar issue with the gas company. When we bought our house, for some reason the previous owner told the gas company they had a pool. Well the first summer they did an in person reading, then they guesstimated the next month! You guessed it, the bill was almost triple the previous month. When I called they said "well you have a pool heater" I asked them if they seriously thought I ran the heater for a full month in August?!!!! I had them take that off right away.
BTW, the pool heater only cost an extra $30 a month to run sporadically, turn it on the morning and off around 1 when it was warm. The heater died last year and I now have a solar heater on my roof. Keeps the pool warm with no extra charges.
