I am embarassed

Howdy. Bought our trailer new in 2007. Have never washed it. I havc years of bugs, dirt and grime on it. I have now resolved to clear it up. Our long distance truck driving son sez I should take it to a truck car wash. I think the rubber roof would suffer harm. I have seen some kind of power washer at Costco. Anyway, requesting guidance. Advise please. Thanks!
  • To my knowledge, a truck bay of a car wash is just a bigger area with cat walks on either side for getting up higher.
  • a pressure washer will do a great job of tearing up the decals on the sides of the camper........ I learned this the hard way.
  • The rubber roof on my TC was pretty black from sitting on the Wet side of WA for years before we bought it this year.
Just went up last week and cleaned it. Bucket of dish soap water and a floor broom, scrubbed it all. Hit the whole thing with the 2500psi pressure washer. Came out pretty clean, still some stains but no more black streaks for a while. Wasnt slippery either like laundry detergent. That stuff is death on a roof! (Was spreadign Tide on my house roof in WA to kill the moss and it started raining. Almost came off the roof the quick way before I got done!
  • Always wash the roof first, why would anyone spend time and elbow grease to clean the sides and then clean a roof that has never been cleaned before to run down on you very clean sides.
    Makes no sense to me.

  • Several RV dealers recommended to me that I wash the rubber roof with plane powered TIDE detergent. I tried it and it works great, but be careful because it is VERY slippery. Wash the roof first and keep the side of the trailer wet to avoid letting the run off streaks from staining the sides. Then wash the rig with any good cleaner, except tide because it will leave a powder residue on the gel-coat. I would avoid using a pressure washer.
  • You need to wash the sides first, otherwise washing the roof will leave streaks down the sides and make them harder to clean. I would start at the local car wash then go home and use some elbow grease to finish it up.

Why not just wash the roof yourself? Get some good cleaner and get up there with a Boars Hair brush and start scrubbing. Chances are that you'd lose a lot of caulking and do more harm than good by just power washing it, imo.

If you get the roof wet and let some good soapy solution penetrate the roof, then scrub it, you'll be amazed at how clean the roof will be. Same goes for the sides.
