Having lived through several region wide blackouts in the northeast, I would rate it as unwise. Imagine a northeast blackout taking out the entire nation. The grid is split for a reason, not because some engineer forgot to install a cross-over.
Don't think that's true today. Power and distribution companies have painfully learned from it that they now modernized their tripping and isolation systems.
And with the interconnected grid, it will have effectively a redundant grid that will by-pass and re-route power supplies or add capacities when one area shutdown or trip.
