Ok, I already realize now I made my first big RV mistake. Without understanding the towing capacity considerations I purchased a travel trailer that is just under 3000lbs (dry), for a 2003 Ford Escape...

i bet the dealer told the OP, "Sure your Escape can tow that!":S
i'm assuming you bought a R-pod, based on your username.
it would help if posted what the actual trailer model is, so we can look at hitch weight, UVW and GVWR ratings for it.
if it's a R-pod, any v-6 pickup should be able to tow it.
but i'd look at a modern v-8 truck. you'll find out that the newer v-8's get almost the same gas mileage as v-6 trucks.
my 5.3 v-8 Avalanche, go almost the same exact mileage as the Honda Ridgeline.
