- elkhorn98ExplorerDoubles always gets a stronger reaction from people. I doubt most people including myself have even done it. The facts are with the proper license and equipment it is perfectly legal in ca. I guess you can try to change the law if you don't want people to do it.
- nevadanickExplorerI spent a few years hiring and firing truck drivers and except for a small minority of em, i wouldnt want to see them pulling rv doubles. And yes not every officer knows the regs which is why i verify what i am doing is legal. Wind or passing semi's is not a problem either as everything is set up right and tows straight. I can understand people having doubts about pulling doubles and you should not do it if you have any reservations, but i can assure you i am as safe if not more so than you are.
- BriskExplorer III would pull it.
- RAS43Explorer IIIAnd the trailer should have brakes also. It is not like the truck will be doing all the work.
Now, if it was me I wouldn't do it. I double with a 5th wheel and a boat which is very stable. - mooky_stinksExplorerF250's with an 8' box are little pick ups now???
- rvtenExplorerNot the pulling power.
But the stopping power. Sorry I would want more than a little PU. - Tango__AE7UIExplorerI have seen a pickup towing a TT with a 20ft+ boat behind here in Utah.
The TT appeared to be 20 -24 ft also.
The total combination had to be over 65 feet.
I will not be doing that any time soon.
The boat may have had surge brakes. - gijoecamExplorer

I really doubt the hitch on the truck, the drawbar on the truck, the ball on the truck, AND the coupler on the front of the trailer are rated for the combined weight of the trailer + jeep. As per CHP, if it is not rated for the combined weight, it is not legal.
And why, exactly, would you doubt that? A 3/4 ton Ford is easily rated for north of 20000lbs GCWR. They sell class-5 receivers rated for 17,000lbs or more these days. Draw-Tite (Or maybe Reese/Valley?) make a service vehicle hitch receiver that can be attached to almost any frame rails that is rated for 14,000lbs gross. They sell brake-buddies for toads.
Point is: The equipment is certainly out there and available.
As for the legality, I've seen various opinions offered over the years for California in particular, but can't recall seeing a definitive answer in the statutes with my own eyes that difinitively states it one way or the other. - christopherglenExplorerI really doubt the hitch on the truck, the drawbar on the truck, the ball on the truck, AND the coupler on the front of the trailer are rated for the combined weight of the trailer + jeep. - BedlamModeratorIn general TH's have stronger frames and the axle placed farther back than typical TT's. Both of these attributes will help in this towing setup.
I would worry about the TH coupler rating and the ball mount and receiver on the TV being able to handle the load and hope they have been upgraded to 15K lbs or more to handle the combination. Hopefully the Jeep has a supplemental braking device to prevent jackknifing when decelerating in turns or on down slopes.
