When frying stuff that splatters, DW routinely puts a layer of paper towels down on the stovetop, puts the skillet on top of the paper towels, and fries away. Any heat that gets to the paper towel is from the bottom of the hot pan, and is not hot enough to do more than slightly discolor the paper towel.
