- fprestoExplorerNot in the RV but do at home. It is one of the best purchases I have made. Almost instant heat, as much control as gas, easy clean, etc. The only drawback is that they heat the pan not the cook top. That in itself is not a problem but your pan must be made of a ferrous material such as iron or steel. No glass or aluminum unless it is stainless clad in aluminum. An easy test is that if a magnet will stick to it, it will work on induction.

It is a big AC magnet, which induces an electrical current in a metal (cast iron would be best) pot which then heats the pot internally. The cooktop itself does not get hot, although it will warm up as the pot heats it from above.
It will not cook things in ceramic or glass pots, it requires a metal pot.
Some folks swear by 'em.
