Inexpensive Kids Toys? Foam Planes, etc.....

I'm looking at some ideas to keep the kids in my family entertained while camping. This past weekend I bought some little foam airplanes that they could fly. I also had some glow sticks.

I'm shopping on amazon right now and I came across a box of those small foam WWII planes that you have to put together. I used to get them all the time from the ice cream man. lol

I also have a dozen of those army men with parachutes. You throw the whole thing in the air and watch as he descends with the parachute deployed.

The boys are 5,4,3 and 2. What else might be good?
  • Colored chalk is good if there is a place to write on. Large diameter pieces are good for small hands. Silly string is fun but can be messy. That may be not appropriate for the smaller boys. Jigsaw puzzles are good for indoor play. There are ones made for different ages. When our boys were a little older we used the dinette table in our TT for a large puzzle. We always ate outside so the puzzle could stay in one place until it was finished. We never hooked up the TV so they did different activities than they did at home. A simple ball toss at a board with a hole or holes makes a game for all ages.
  • When the girls were that little we had extra of toys they loved to use at home. Placed them in a tub and labeled it. Now they have jump ropes, frizbies, ladder ball, bag toss, and most important is bikes. When we go to the ocean we take kits for them to fly.
  • A kite is cheap enterainment. We bought our kids a few cheapie kites at Walmart and they had fun (well, as long as the wind held up).
  • We bought an "all inclusive kit" once...flying disc, velcro balls to play catch with, cheapo badmittion raquets/birds, and more...it was well worth it.
  • When I traveled out of the country a lot, I would always hit the cheap toy aisle and load up on cheap toys to give to the street kids that never had a toy. Cheap crayons, markers, coloring books, jacks, marbles, the airplanes that you mentioned-except they were balsa wood, bubbles, play-doh, little cars, balls, frisbees, lots of cheap little toys. (I would also load up on bite sized candies. Was a hero on the plane one Christmas day in El Salvador when we were not allowed off the plane for more than 8 hours with no food or water...)

edit- paddles with the ball attached, board games
  • Miniature cars and trucks like Hot wheels or Matchbox. The $5 each at the dollar store sounds like a great idea!
  • Things we use - soccer balls, footballs(nerf for that age). We often have a mini game of two hand touch break out. We have a giant (2 ft across?) frisbee that has soft edge and fabric center, our 5 year old loves that. We have done the glow sticks, and they are a lot of fun! I also like the foam airplanes, may have to get some of those!

We often camp where it is sandy, so any buckets and shovels are a big hit.
  • head to the dollar store & let them go wild with $5 each!! LOL
